Ranking Africa's Best World Cup Games

Portugal 3-1 Morocco
Morocco's first World Cup victory came in only their second campaign, as they reached the knockout stages in 1986.
This was the finest hour for a superb Atlas Lions side that included Abdelmajid Dolmy, Badou Zaki, and Aziz Bouderbala, and crucially, this side was unfazed by facing some of Europe's heavyweights at the Mondiale.

Goals by Abderrazak Khairi and Merry Krimau propelled them over Portugal, and they went on to top a group that included Poland and England before falling to West Germany in the second round.

Morocco has only won one World Cup match since 1998, against Scotland.

Ghana defeats the Czech Republic 2-0.
Ghana had the youngest side at the 2006 World Cup, with an average age of 24 years and 203 days, and after losing to Italy in their first encounter, they were expected to exit after two games.

They got a bad draw since the defeat by Italy was followed by a game with the Czech Republic, who had reached the semi-finals of the European Championships two years before.

Ghana, on the other hand, was unfazed, taking a two-minute lead through Asamoah Gyan before gaining a man advantage when Tomas Ujfalusi was sent off after an hour.

Sulley Muntari sealed the victory late in the game, as a team led by Pavel Nedved, Tomas Rosicky, and Petr Cech was startled by the young Black Stars

Serbia 3-2 Ivory Coast
The Ivory Coast, like Ghana in 2006, was dealt a nightmarish draw in their first tournament debut, with opening matches against the Netherlands and Argentina.

They were eliminated after two 3-2 defeats, although they still had the chance to conclude their campaign with three points when they met Serbia and Montenegro in their last group game.

After 20 minutes, they were 2-0 behind, but a spectacular comeback guaranteed that the Elephants won their first World Cup with an Aruna Dindane double and a late Bonaventure Kalou penalty.

They undoubtedly left Germany with their heads held high, but they were unable to advance past the group stage in their two consecutive World Cup appearances.

France 2-1 South Africa
South Africa may have failed at the first hurdle on home soil in 2010, but they actually outperformed the tournament, holding Mexico in their opener (which could have made this list) and defeating giants France in their last group game.

Of course, it was a Bleus team beset with turmoil and scandal, but Bafana Bafana's 2-1 victory should be remembered as one of the greatest World Cup giant murders in history.

South Africa departed their own tournament—the first on African soil—with a significant scalp thanks to two first-half goals from Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela.

Argentina 1-2 Nigeria
The fourth installment of Nigeria and Argentina's storied rivalry was the best of the group, as these two old adversaries resumed hostilities after meeting in 1994, 2002, and 2010.

In 2014, the match in Porto Alegre was a direct shootout between Lionel Messi and Ahmed Musa, both of whom scored braces, with Vincent Enyeama in inspired form to deny Messi any further goals.

Marcos Rojo's 50th-minute goal—his fifth in a frantic first hour—proved to be the difference between the two, with both advancing to the knockout stages.

3. Senegal (Quarter Finals in 2002)

Senegal's destruction of France in the 2002 World Cup was one of the best events in the country's football history. They carried their form throughout the competition, dispatching strong nations game by game

They were on a quest for immortality, reaching the World Cup quarterfinals and becoming only the second African nation to accomplish so. However, an excruciating defeat to Turkey terminated the Lions' World Cup run.
