great news !: Google to invest in a billion dollar mega project in Africa

Google will spend $1 billion to construct its first African Cloud region in South Africa.

Google has announced intentions to invest $1 billion in South Africa to develop its first cloud infrastructure.

The computer behemoth is following in the footsteps of Amazon Web Service and Microsoft Azure, both of which established similar resources on the continent a few years ago.

At the same time, the company announced the construction of Dedicated Interconnect sites, which will connect cloud services across multiple locations. Nairobi (Kenya), Lagos (Nigeria), and Cape Town (South Africa) were the initial cities chosen for cloud interconnection.

"We are offering customers and partners options; they can choose where they want to store data and where they want to use cloud services," said Niral Patel, head of Google Cloud Africa.

Google laid its Equiano underwater cable in the continent earlier this year, connecting Africa and Europe. This subsea connection will be used by the corporation to assist supply cloud services across the continent. Equiano first arrived in Togo, then Namibia, Nigeria, and South Africa.

According to Patel, the cable "will make it much easier for our customers and partners to quickly deploy solutions for their businesses, allowing them to leverage our computer artificial intelligence or machine learning capabilities, and data analytics to make smarter business decisions going forward."

According to the Google executive, the firm is aware of the data sovereignty that exists in some African countries and will thus allow customers and partners to select where they want to keep their data and consume its cloud services.
